I don't think hope is the same thing as optimism, and mixing them up cost me a while. Optimism expects things to work out. Hope is what's left when you can't honestly expect that, and you keep going anyway.
For a long time I thought hoping for something was a kind of weakness, like admitting I couldn't just make it happen through sheer will. Now I think it's closer to the opposite. It takes more out of a man to keep believing in a better version of things than to give up and call that realism.
Most of hope isn't the bright part. It's the waiting. It's the stretch of ordinary days where nothing has changed yet and you don't get proof that it's going to. That stretch is where most people quit, right before the light actually starts to move.
Hope without work is just wishing, and I've done enough of that to know the difference. Real hope shows up in the form of one more attempt, one more application, one more hard conversation, not in a feeling you sit around waiting to arrive.
I've learned to be suspicious of hope that refuses to look at the dark honestly. That's not hope, that's denial wearing a better outfit. The kind I trust looks straight at how bad something actually is, and decides to move anyway.
So this is where I've landed, for now. Hope is a decision I keep making on the days it isn't earned yet. Not blind. Just stubborn, on purpose, about which direction I'm facing.
